ASSISTANCE APPEALS FOR VICTIMS OF TYPHOON ONDOY

29 September 2009 – Typhoon Ondoy (international code name Tropical Storm Ketsana) caused massive floods in the Philippines that inundated nation’s capital region and 27 provinces. In a span of six hours, the typhoon poured about 34.1 centimeters of rain onto the Metro Manila region, close to the 39.2 centimeter average for the entire month of September. The typhoon affected 89,953 families, numbering 451,683 persons, forcing them to flee their homes as floodwaters overwhelmed entire communities. As of yesterday, 100 persons were confirmed to have died as a result of the floods. This recent flooding is the Philippines’ worst in 42 years.

Individuals, organizations, and parties wishing to contribute to the relief and assistance of affected families and communities are advised of the appeals of various Filipino organizations in New South Wales and appropriate Philippine Government agencies.
