Post History

As early as 1946, there were already plans by the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila to establish a Philippine Mission in Australia and New Zealand. In late 1947, the opening of the first Philippine Post in Australia was decided. On 15 April 1948, Consul General Manuel A. Alzate, along with eight members of his staff, arrived in Sydney to establish a consular office. Alzate was Consul General in Sydney until 1949 when he was transferred to Honolulu.

Succeeding Alzate was Minister Regala who arrived in Sydney on 15 November 1949 from his posting in San Francisco, USA. It was during Regala's term of office that the Philippine Government also elevated its consular representation in Australia to the status of legation. As such, the ministers of both legations were assigned additional duties related to political matters.

In January 1956, Minister Regala who had been promoted to the rank of Ambassador presented his credentials as the first Philippine Ambassador of Australia to Governor-General William Slim. This elevated the Legation Office to the status of a regular embassy. Seven months later, Regala was reassigned to Italy. He was succeeded by Ambassador Jose F. Imperial, former Chief of Mission in Tokyo who was in Sydney until 1960 when he was replaced by Ambassador Mariano Ezpeleta.

In the meantime, preparations for the transfer of the Philippine Embassy from Sydney to Canberra were underway. With the eventual transfer of the Philippine Embassy to Canberra in the early '60s, the office in Sydney became a separate entity from the Embassy and acquired the status of a regular Consulate General with consular jurisdiction over New South Wales. In 1995, the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney was also given consular jurisdiction over New Caledonia.
