THREE FILIPINO-AUSTRALIANS RECEIVE 2012 CFO AWARDS FOR SERVICE TO THE FILIPINO COMMUNITY AND FOR MIGRATION ADVOCACY
 Sydney, 20 December 2012 - Three members of the Filipino community in New South Wales, Australia, garnered two major awards from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) for 2012. On 5 December 2012, Atty. Imelda Argel received the Banaag Award from President Benigno S. Aquino in an awarding ceremony at Malacañan Palace. The Banaag Award is a category of the Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas administered by the CFO, and conferred on Filipino individuals or associations for their contributions which have significantly benefited a sector or community in the Philippines or advanced the cause of overseas Filipino communities. This year, there were 12 recipients of the Banaag Award.

UPDATE ON SITUATION IN MINDANAO IN THE WAKE OF TYPHOON PABLO
According to a report dated 17 December 2012 of the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (NDRRMC), Typhoon Pablo (international name: Bopha), has left a total of 1,043 dead, 2,662 injured, while 844 are still missing. Thirty-seven (37) cities and thirty (30) provinces were affected.

UPDATE ON SITUATION IN MINDANAO IN THE WAKE OF TYPHOON PABLO
According to a report dated 12 December 2012 of the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (NDRRMC), Typhoon Pablo (international name: Bopha), has left a total of 740 dead, 1,947 injured, while 890 are still missing. Thirty-seven (37) cities and thirty (30) provinces were affected.
The total cost of damages was placed at PhP14 billion, broken down into PhP4 billion in damages to infrastructure, PhP9.5 billion in damages to agriculture and PhP50 million in damage to private property.

FILIPINO COMMUNITY IN NEW SOUTH WALES EXTENDS AID TO VICTIMS OF TYPHOON PABLO
Mr. Arturo Sayas, President of the Philippine Community Council (PCC) of New South Wales, Australia, informed the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney that the Council handed over today, 12 December 2012, to the Mt. Apo Lions Club of Davao the amount of A$5,000 (Php212,543) for the victims of Typhoon Pablo under the Council’s Philippine Australian Disaster Emergency Response (PADER) program.
PCC Director Angie Jenkins and volunteers of the Mt. Apo Lions Club are scheduled to distribute relief goods bought from the donated amount to around 700 families or 3,000 individuals in the Compostela Valley on 16 December 2012.

ADVISORY ON THE DEVASTATION CAUSED BY TYPHOON PABLO (BOPHA)
From 4 to 9 December 2012, Typhoon Pablo's hurricane-force winds brought torrential rain that triggered a combination of flood and landslides in the eastern coast of Mindanao. President Benigno S. Aquino III declared a national state of calamity on 8 December 2012 for government resources to be concentrated on the delivery of aid to thousands of people displaced by Typhoon Pablo in Mindanao, Central Visayas and Palawan.
